Dawn Langhi- The ecology of Eden (The Kayapo)
In the section Gardening the Amazon the Kayapo tribe’s agriculture abilities are examined. After reading the section you cannot help but wonder why some of these practices are not used in America. Eisenberg discusses how they do not have to worry about bugs eating their crops because they plant small patches that are scattered, thus a large concentration of pests cannot develop. After reading about this tribe you realize that this is a very small group of people who all hold the same beliefs and goals. Maybe our society has become too large and more importantly to diverse, in terms of beliefs and goals. While being different and unique is important, it also means you look at the world differently and hold different aspects of life more significantly than others. Some individuals do not feel or what to feel connected to the environment. They love technology, cars, and monetary objects. To them helping the environment is not a very big concern. It makes me so mad when driving down the street and all you see in the gutters is used fast-food containers and bags. There are trashcans everywhere but yet some people feel they can throw garbage wherever they want. These differing values is why I think it is going to be very hard to get people to change their life style.
